If there is a sudden illness or severe injury, make a phone call to a fire station to call an ambulance. (Phone number is 119) For small injuries or illnesses, the case that you can go to a hospital by yourself please take a taxi or your own car.
When you call “119” please calm down and tell the operator(1)It is an emergency (2)What the situation is (3)Where you are (address or nearby landmark ) (4) Your name (5) The phone number that you are calling from. When you hear the siren please go outside to show the way.
*Even if you can not speak Japanese, please tell the operator at least where you are. If anyone can speak Japanese around you, please ask the person to help.
“119” is a toll free number. You don't need a coin or phone card to call the number from a public phone.
Typhoon
Even though we don't expect much rain in this area, it may rain a lot around the high mountains and the mountain district. If so, the rivers will flood, and heavy landslides could occur, bringing damage to the cities. It could paralyze our lives and all transportation facilities.
There was much serious damage, and local deaths, in October, 2004. Do not try to escape when the storm is raging. You may be injured by things flying in the wind.
Please do not go to the sea or mountains. Also activities such as going to see rice fields and rivers would be most dangerous. These areas sustain heavy flooding.
Tsunami
If the storm disrupts the bottom of the sea, it will send large waves as the Tsunami comes ashore. It may go up into the bay as well.
As the waves go back into the sea, the bay will be badly damaged by the Tsunami. The power, at 50cm, could wash a car or move it uncontrollably.
Earthquake
When you feel a strong earthquake (magnitude of over 4), or when the shaking is slow and long, leave the beaches immediately and go to higher places.
Use caution, as furniture, walls, and windows of the buildings may move or fall down during a large earthquake. In January, 1995 there was the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and many people were killed.
Talk about, and test, your escape route to a safe place. It is important for each of us to move without rushing and panic.
